I have debated for awhile whether or not we should attempt to have Ryder potty trained before baby's arrival. I dreaded the thought of having 2 kids in diapers (especially since we use cloth) but also dreaded the thought of having one of them out of diapers and having to drop everything in public to find a bathroom if Ryder needed to go - I HATE public bathrooms and avoid them at all costs. The thought of having to deal with taking a toddler in one, and a newborn in tow is pretty daunting for me. As my due date quickly approaches, I had pretty much made up my mind that it was cutting it too close to the baby coming and all the changes that will bring for Ryder to try and change anything else in his life. Turns out he had other plans.
About a month ago, Ryder decided he was ready to use the potty. One day after his nap, we were sitting on the couch and he started trying to take off his diaper telling me he needed to go pee. We have had a little potty for him since he was about 18 months (he was showing interest then so we bought one, but I was honestly not ready so it has basically just been sitting in the bathroom since then). I decided to take him in and see what happened. I sat him down and after a minute or two I got up to finish getting ready because we were going to run errands. I left him diaper-less and told him that if he needed to go, use the potty - thinking I'd be cleaning up a puddle on the floor in a little bit. The potty we bought makes noise when it's being used successfully. I was back in our bathroom getting ready when Ryder came in and looked at me funny, then kind of stood there deep in thought ..... and suddenly ran off. I couldn't believe my ears a few seconds later when I heard his potty going off! I ran to the other bathroom and sure enough he was sitting on the potty, peeing! We were both very excited about it. After we went out and did our errands, I took his diaper off again when we got home. Just before I was going to get him ready for bed, he was standing by the couch playing a game on my phone when he jumped back and looked down - he had peed a tiny bit on the floor - I reminded him to use the potty for that and he ran straight to the bathroom and sat down to finish! I was pretty amazed that he was able to stop himself like that.
The next couple days he really wasn't into it and kept asking for his diaper on. He had a couple accidents and a couple successes but I really didn't want to push him, so let him wear diapers when he wanted. After a couple days of that he decided he liked being "nakey" and using the potty. He has done GREAT!!! I pretty much kept him bottomless for a full week and tried to stay home as much as possible. He really didn't have any accidents. Somewhere in the 2nd week I started putting him in underwear. He would still go to the potty every time but would just sit down and pee with his underwear on. After a couple days though he started to get the hang of it and now he tells us when he needs to go (instead of just running and doing it) so that we can go with him and help him get them down. I am so proud that he is doing so great! 2 weeks ago I finally got brave enough to start taking him in public with underwear on and he has been AWESOME! He has only had 2 accidents and they were both situations where I couldn't have expected anything different.
I swore I wasn't going to be the mom that carried a little potty in the car with us - I always thought that was kind of weird. It took one HORRIBLE public restroom experience to change my mind on that. Plus, Ryder is pretty terrified of the big potty right now. So now when we leave the house, his potty comes with us. It's what works for now. And I am sure with a newborn along too, it will make life easier. We still put him in a diaper at night, but he wakes up dry every morning. I think we'll wait another couple weeks before we switch to underwear at night too. I am just so proud of my little guy!! He is so smart and really made potty training a breeze!
