One for the books .....

Well this week is going down as one of the crappiest in awhile. Wednesday morning I was leaving to go to the gym, opened the door to go into the garage and immediately noticed that there was a lot more light coming through the garage door than usual. I could tell from where I was standing that the door was extremely dented and since we had some pretty good storms the day before, I thought to myself, "Could it have gotten that windy last night, to blow the door in?" I called for Rudy to come and stood frozen in the doorway until he got there ... then we approached the door and looked through the cracks, he said "The Civic has been hit!" I thought he was joking until I caught a glance of a dent in the back of the civic. We turned around, flew through the house (I think I muttered that I was going to cry) and out the front door to find this:

WHAT!?!?!

Yep, broken beer bottle in the driveway

We were pretty baffled about this tire outline, until we realized that their spare tire must have fallen off.

We were both in complete shock at what we were seeing. How did this happen? WHO did this? What time did it happen? How did we not hear it? How could somebody do this and just take off? How will we pay for this damage? And we were immediately thankful that Ryder was not hurt because his room is only a few feet away. We pretty much just sat there in disbelief for a little while and then we realized we needed to call the cops. We were surprised that they wouldn't actually come to our house and just told us to go online and file a report. Thanks for the help. I realize that without any clear cut evidence of who did it, there wasn't much they could do, but somehow I felt like it would bring a little comfort if they came out. One of the biggest issues from the get-go was that we couldn't get the garage up and get our other vehicle out. So we filed the police report and then contacted the insurance to see where to begin. I filed the claim with them and was told it could be up to 2 days before the guy who would be handling our claim would contact us .... so what were we supposed to do in the meantime? The Civic was drive-able but it doesn't have air conditioning so we don't ever take Ryder in it. I had the name of the guy handling the insurance so I called him and left a message asking if we needed to leave the garage exactly how it was or if it would be ok for us to try and bang the dents out so we could at least get it up and get the other car out. He didn't call me back until the end of the day and basically just said to email him pictures, along with the bill/estimate for the replacement. Our deductible is $1000, which is about what we figured the new door would cost, so it's all coming out-of-pocket anyway. Great. Plus a $500 deductible on the car. Even more great. I spent the entire day stressing about the whole situation, waiting for answers and wondering how in the world we are going to pay for all this - it's the worst possible time.

Spent the whole day Thursday calling garage door places to get estimates and having people come out to look at it. The first few estimates were a little over $900. We spent most of Friday dealing with this all too - which sucked because Thurs/Fri were Rudy's last 2 days off before we leave for our trip next week and we had a huge list of things that needed to be done. We did find someone to do the garage door for $600 which is a lot better than the others, but still totally crappy that we have to pay this money out of our pocket for something we didn't do, and even worse we don't know who did it and what exactly happened! How is this fair?? I know, "life isn't fair," but this is just beyond ridiculous. It's so RUDE. Why do people feel like they don't have to take responsibility for their actions? I really hope this person is out there feeling EXTREMELY guilty and that their car (which we believe was a large white truck) is heavily damaged.

We talked to a few neighbors after we discovered this, to see if anyone saw or heard anything that night. One guy has cameras but he said they don't catch anything past his driveway. I had at least hoped that it would see the responsible party driving away so we could get a vehicle ID. Then the guy across the street drove by, rolled down his window and said, "Did that happen at about 2am last night?" Turns out, he was awake and heard it happen - said it sounded like a garbage truck came tearing through and then heard our car alarm going off, but by the time he got up and looked out the window, they were gone and because it was dark he didn't see the damage. He said a little while later he heard a car door (and we actually believe that they came back because it seems that their spare tire fell off and they had to have gotten out of there really quick and didn't have time to grab the tire). The guy with the cameras said he heard something but never got up and looked.

Yesterday Rudy took the car to be assessed by the insurance. They determined it to be "totaled," since the damage is pretty extensive (and so many parts of the car are involved) and would cost more to fix than the value of the car. They gave the option of buying the car back for pretty cheap and then we thought maybe we could get most of the damage taken care of with the remainder of the money, BUT we know it needs a new timing belt soon and also found out yesterday the air conditioner needs to be completely replaced (we thought it may be something simple) .... so we were wondering if it was going to be worth it to have to put so much more money into it. I was surprised at how much they were going to give us for the loss, however since the car is still in my dad's name (even though I have been driving it for the past 12 years), he has decided that HE is taking the money. We're really not sure what we are going to do right now, but I really can't handle the stress of it all. We were already stressed about a lot of things - mainly finances, but also another huge thing that no one knows about at this point - and I just feel like I can't handle any more stress. I am literally sick over it. Feel like throwing the towel in on everything. I just keep going back to the fact that this was something completely beyond our control, not something we caused or asked for and it just plain isn't fair. I wish we could change it. But we can't. And I don't know how we'll get through it, but as long as I have Rudy and Ryder, I guess we can get through anything.

Want to know the best (and pretty much only good part) of my week? The WEATHER. I am surprised to be saying that. It's been amazing. Awesome storms everyday. A couple of days it rained for HOURS. I was in heaven. Thursday was supposedly the 2nd wettest day in Tucson EVER. I feel like that can't be true! It rained most of the day, and poured on and off but I feel like we have had much wetter rains! It was 68 degrees that day (at least during what is typically the hottest part of the day). The monsoons are probably over now, but we sure ended with a bang!!

Anyway, there's my vent.
